چکیده

Electron sheaths form near the surface of objects biased more positive than the plasma potential, such as a Langmuir probe collecting electron saturation current. Generally, the formation of electron sheaths requires that the electron-collecting area be sufficiently smaller ( m M 2.3 e times) than the ion-collecting area. They are commonly thought to be local phenomena that collect the random thermal electron current, but do not otherwise perturb a plasma. Here, using experiments on an electrode embedded in a wall in a helium discharge, particle-in-cell simulations, and theory it is shown that under low temperature plasma conditions (  T T e i) electron sheaths are far from local. Instead, a long presheath region (27 mm, approximately an electron’s mean free path) extends into the plasma where electrons are accelerated via a pressure gradient to a flow speed exceeding the electron thermal speed at the sheath edge. This fast flow is found to excite instabilities, causing strong fluctuations near the sheath edge.

Plasma-wall transition in weakly collisional plasmas

This paper reviews some theoretical and computational aspects of plasma-wall interactions, in particidar the formation of sheaths. Some fundamental residts are derived analytically using a simple fluid model, and are subsequently tested with kinetic simulations. The various regions composing the plasma-wall transition (Debye sheath, colUsional and magnetic presheaths) are discussed in details.

Large amplitude dust ion acoustic solitons: considering dust polarity and nonextensive electrons

The characteristics of arbitrary amplitude dust ion acoustic solitary waves (DIASWs) are studied in unmagnetized dusty plasmas whose constituents are cold uid ions, nonextensive electrons and stationary negative/positive dust particles. The pseudopotential approach has been used to investigate the structure of localized waves. It is found that, solitary waves exist in a definite interval for th...

Sheaths with Dust Particles in the Oblique Magnetic Field

It is simulated the non-linear one-dimensional sheaths with dust particles of the given size, density and profile in an oblique magnetic field, using the modified PIC method with self-consistent dust particle charge. The Coulomb scattering and the collection of electrons and ions by dust particles are simulated by the Monte-Carlo method with 3D velocity distribution functions for electrons and ...

Inverse Braking Radiation and Resonance Absorption in Corona Plasmas of Inertial Confinement Fusion

Abstract: In this paper, combining the Maxwell equations with the electron balanceequation, we obtain the inverse braking radiation absorption coefficient in a laser fusioncorona plasma. For a fixed plasma temperature, variations of the absorption coefficientversus the penetration depth into the plasma are illustrated numerically for differentvalues of laser wavelength. ...
